Montgó Mountain Natural Park, Jávier

Posted by Luci Ackers on 13 April 2015

Montgó Mountain is a spectacular area of the Costa Blanca. The mountain stands guard over the popular resort of Jávea, looming up to its north and providing a dramatic backdrop. The mountain range is part of the Montgó Mountain Natural Park which stretches all the way to the coast and is a wonderful place to visit with unique flora and beautiful scenery. While visiting make sure to keep a look out for the Mediterranean oak, rockrose and Valencian rock violet that grow here, not to mention various birds of prey such as eagles and kestrels.

It is possible to climb the Mountain from all sides; rising 753 meters from the valley floor, the hike up is enjoyable and the views from the top are incredible. You can see for miles, out to the Mediterranean Sea and on clear days as far as the white cliffs of Ibiza. Walks from the base to the summit can take around four hours but you will travel through a range of ecosystems and enjoy a whole host of interesting sights.

As well as its flora and fauna, this National Park is protected for its archaeological finds, some of which date back 30,000 years. Cave paintings, Roman pottery and Stone-Age tools have all been discovered here. Folklore also surrounds the mountain due to it apparently resembling an elephant's head and trunk. It is known locally as 'Monty the elephant' and walks even embrace the name with routes like the 'trunk to tail'.

The Natural Park is a hot-spot for walkers, cyclists, mountain bikers and hikers, there are so many tracks and paths to follow and easier routes are available for family adventures too. For some of the trails have a look here.

Our fantastic villas in Jávier are close to this amazing walking location and provide a great base from which to explore the Natural Park. Find out how you can stay here by following the link below.
