Walk Instructions
Behind the Discovery Centre is a large map and a signpost. Follow ‘Riverside Ramble’ along a surfaced
path passing the ‘Mammoth Tusks’ and then soon turn left on a smaller path. Go through a waymarked
little gate to reach a lane, passing a house on the left with historic motoring signs over its garage. Keep
straight on past attractive timber-framed houses to a gated metal footbridge over the River Onny.
1. Cross the bridge and turn slightly left following
‘Riverside Ramble’ sign passing to the right of a corner
of a wood. Walk towards a red brick house, and go
through a metal kissing gate to reach the B4368
Craven Arms to Much Wenlock road.
2. Turn left to cross the road bridge over the river, then
turn right at once, over a stile, and go down steps and
through a little gate to resume the path along the side
of the river. After passing a beautifully renovated mill
building, with water wheel, Halford village is in view,
across the river, with its church prominent on a knoll.
The weir which provided the head of water for the mill
is most impressive after heavy rain. Continue along the
river bank, passing many old willows and alder.
3. Go through a kissing gate, pass a memorial seat and
turn right to cross the river again on a footbridge. Go
through another kissing gate and cross a former water
meadow on a surfaced path. Pass another seat and go
through a kissing gate to join an unsurfaced lane
4. Turn right, soon passing a former school house.
There is a ‘Riverside Ramble’ sign as the lane becomes
hard surfaced before Halford village is reached. Pass
St. Thomas’s church, which has a south doorway
dating from Norman times. The views from this
slightly elevated position are quite extensive, including
Hopesay Hill on the far side of Craven Arms. Pass above
Halford Mill and pass a waymarked road junction
before reaching the B4368 main road. Turn right for
50m. to reach point 2 of the outward route. Turn left to
return to the Discovery Centre
