Upper Norton Circular Walk to Bache Pool walking and hiking route

Walk Instructions

A walk directly from the property, using roads, farm tracks and field paths. Mainly gates with a few stiles. Some of the route is across fields, there may be mud after rain. No significant climbs. Paths across two fields may be blocked by crops at certain times of the year. Please respect the farmer and go around the edge of the field. Please note that the stiles are not dog friendly.

1. With the clubhouse on your left, head through the HPB site downhill, ignore the 5-bar gate straight ahead, but follow the tarmac round to the right. In about 50m, go through a wooden 5-bar gate on the left, bear very slightly left and keep the fence to the right. Go round to the right then left to a small metal gate. Go through the gate and cross the field, turning half left and keeping to the left of the largest and nearest oak tree to head downhill to the bottom left hand corner of the field, by a telegraph pole. Ahead are fine views of the Clee Hills – highest point of Shropshire and featured on the Mappa Mundi in Hereford Cathedral. To the right is Titterstone Clee source of dhustone one of the hardest-wearing rocks that paved the Victorian cities and to the left Brown Clee once site of the highest coal mine in England.

2. Go through a way marked metal gate. Cross a ditch on a plank bridge, then bear slightly right to cross a large field. Go through a way marked farm gate following a bridleway sign turning half left and join a farm track. Go uphill, soon passing through a woodland. Go through a gate beside a cattle grid.

3. Following the direction of the finger post turn half right for a few metres, go through a farm metal gate and follow the path downhill and to the left. Cross a two strip farm track, follow your track down and round to the right and cross over the earth dam at the end of the pool to a stile. GR 471 817. Bache Pool is a long narrow one acre lake with plenty of large carp. Also bream, chub, roach, rudd and tench.

4. Go over the stile, and bearing very slightly right crossing the field to a stile a few metres to the left of a large oak tree GR 469 816. Go over this wobbly stile turning very slightly right and head for another large oak tree. At the tree go through the gap in the hedge and then turn left so the hedge is on the left.

5. Follow the hedge round to a metal gate. Pass through the gate and cross the small field to a stile leading on to a lane. GR 468 812. Go over the stile, turn right and walk approximately 200 m and turn right on a surfaced road. Continue on this road to a T junction, turn right back to Upper Norton.
