Walk Instructions
Start/car parking: HPB Palazzo Stigliano.
Refreshments: Bar/café, Stigliano
Another walk across the wooded hillside which rises abruptly from
the extensive Piano di Rosia plain. The route follows designated
trail no. 7 to and from the ancient little village of Torri, where the
houses face inwards in a close huddle, their backs forming a defensive
perimeter wall. Tucked away at the top of the village is a small former
abbey with a fine little cloister, open to the public on Mondays and
Fridays, only until noon.
Facing the reception, walk to the right and descend to the adjacent lane.
Turn left at the bottom and reach the little square of Stigliano. The little
café on the left is open and you can stop for a refreshment, even on the
way back.
1. Keep the right following signs to Relais Borgo Stigliano and in 40
yards, look carefully for a little path on the right, at the end of the stone
wall close to a villa. Descend some steps to reach a concrete footbridge
across a dry streambed. Ascend at the far side to a steep little bank an
join a tarmac road by a disused quarry. Go straight on the tarmac ends
and then slightly to the right at the fork. Oak and chestnut line the way.
At a small clearing in 300 yards fork left, uphill, to a meeting place of
tracks defined by a four large oak trees.
2. Head between these trees to a narrower path descending between
the brambles. Pass a water supply on the right and continue uphill. Torri
is now in the view through the trees ahead, with Rosia beyond. Ignore
a track descending to the right and stay in the main track, with the
cypresses on the right. At a major fork in 120 yards, go left uphill, the
track is beautiful with white roses in early spring. The track curves to cross
a small dry valley. Ignore tracks to the right and left and carry on round
the hillside above Torri. Pass a bricked up cave and on above the village;
the track soon bends shortly to the right to descend past old olive trees
to join an unsurfaced roadway. Turn right and right again at the public
road to head for an entrance gate to the village. The abbey entrance in
tucked away to the right.
3. Return to Palazzo Stigliano by the same route
