Walk Instructions
Start/car parking: HPB Palazzo Stigliano
Refreshments: None en route
An attractive circuit around the high ground of Montestigliano,
using more of the lanes and other good tracks which are readily
accessed from Stigliano. There is a fair amount of ascent, but
no really steep gradients. Some good viewpoints.
Walk down the path to the right of Reception to descend to the lane
on the West of the HPB property. Bear left, walking South uphill along
the road. Go past the “Poggio” turning. Pass the swampy depression
then bear left to walk for about ¾ mile up the rough track which is an
avenue of cypresses, passing two crossroad, with former millstones on
the sides.
1. At the far end, turn left along a farm track. The view includes the
wooded hills behind Orgia. Stay with the main track at a junction and
head downhill towards a large farmstead, Montestigliano, ignoring
the ‘No entry/dead-end’ sign.
2. At the junction immediately before the main farm buildings turn
right, downhill. Pass a few houses and bear left, following the walled
track through an olive grove, still descending, going towards more
farm buildings. On the left there is a fountain with plaque dated 1873;
alongside there is also a communal washing trough. Bend sharp right
here to continue a zig-zag descent along an avenue of cypresses,
through an open field. Reach a large block of derelict/farm property
(Vacchereccia) at a bend.
3. Here turn sharp left, walking west, onto what could easily pass as an
English country lane, rather than going down the avenue of cypresses
leading to the main road. Carry on over a cattle grid. Soon you reach
Valli, a sad looking abandoned hamlet and then get to a junction with
a large iron cross on a brick plinth on the left of the track (it may be
hidden by foliage).
4. Bear round to the right onto the first track of two, just before a
disused quarry, to follow another undulating lane. Shortly the small
Stigliano cemetery can be seen through the trees on the right. At a
junction bear right, going to the right of the grass paddock of Poderina
Castle and join the main tarmac road leading to Palazzo Stigliano. Turn
left to rise to the derelict Stigliano church and return to the Palazzo.
