Walk Instructions
Start/car parking: HPB Palazzo Stigliano
Refreshments: Restaurant/Cafè “La Bottega di Stigliano”
A short walk to introduce the beauty and the history of the old
Stigliano Castle. The history of Stigliano dates back at least as far as
Etruscan times (the hill of Poggiarello was a necropolis, with at least
14 tombs). The Metalliferous Hills’ copper, iron and silver deposits
were heavily worked in Etruscan, Roman and Medieval times.
The mediaeval castle is one of the few intact in the Siena’s
surroundings and was used in the past to control the flat area and
Siena. It consists in a group of three different castles (Poggio, Palazzo
and Poggiarello) that are amazing. The strong, beautiful towers and
part of the strong wall system are still well conserved.
