Famara walking and hiking route

Walk Instructions
Set off along the roadside pavement, rising beside the
south-western edge of the Famara bungalows. There is
a roadside sign ‘Playa’.
1) Turn left at the dirt road at the top of the
development, ‘Calle Risco’. Leave the development,
soon under the great cliffs, which extend for several
miles along this coastline, as far as the Mirador del Rio
(walk 9). The fine views include Isle Graciosa. Descend
gently to reach a junction, where the main track
descends further to the sea. (short cut back to the car
parking, if required).
2) Go straight ahead rising steadily passing an isolated
house, a green oasis among the otherwise sparse
vegetation. Flocks of sea birds soar beneath the cliffs.
Pass a circular enclosure with stone wall, below left,
now rising more gently on a lesser track; to the right is
a ruinous little building.
3) Reach a tiny house, with a huge spoil heap and a
large tree obscuring the entrance to an old tunnel, said
to connect with the inland village of Haria. Commence
the descent to the left along a narrower and stony
track. Above to the right is a concrete tank. Rise slightly
to a junction.
4) Turn very sharp left to continue the descent, almost
to sea level. The long views include Famara, La Caleta
and a string of smallish former volcanoes, close to the
sea. Join the back of beach dirt at the bottom.
5) Bear left to head back towards Famara along the
road, with any desired diversions to the beach.
6) Pass the bottom end of the ‘short cut’ road. Our
dirt road becomes less obvious on the ground. Head
towards the bottom corner of the bungalows, soon
crossing drifts of sand. Either keep as close as possible
to the boundary of Famara or, perhaps preferable, go
well to the right to walk along the back of the beach
for a short distance before bearing left to return to the
parking place.
