Walk Instructions
To the east of the marina is a wide paved promenade.
To access this promenade from the parking area, goto
east of the marina where the steps lead you to the
promenade. Continue up more steps to the promenade.
Just beyond the steps, bear left to head east. The little
tower of Castillo Colorades is to the right, ahead; there
are good views back, over Playa Blanca. The promenade
ends at a not particularly attractive beach; at a junction
at the near end, bear left then right.
1) A sign ‘Playa Papagayo’ directs walkers to the
road around the back of a large hotel/commercial
development. From this for a short distance then take a
walkway, with another ‘Playa Papagayo’ sign, as close
as possible to the back of the buildings, with a children’s
play area to the left and a shopping centre to the right.
Reach a road, with another sign and keep right at a
signposted junction.
2) Leave the built-up area close to the Hotel Papagayo
Arena, along a well-used dirt track across an arid area,
rising towards the sea, with boulders blocking vehicular
access; there are views to Fuertaventura.
3) Two hundred metres before reaching a visible trig
point, fork right to make a gentle descent to the near
end of the splendidly wide sandy beach, Playa Mujeres,
which has two car parks adjacent. The beach is popular
with those who prefer not to wear bathing attire!
Cross the back of the beach and rise along one of the
sandy tracks at the far end. Go over the headland,
bearing right towards the sea, with the buildings and
the car park at Playa Papagayo now in view; there is
a cairn at the highest point of the headland. Descend
towards the next beach, Playa Pozo, passing a cross up
to the left and a concrete tank. Cross the beach before
rising over the next headland. Go down and up to
cross a gully with a cove-like beach below to reach the
former hamlet of Papagayo, now dominated by various
refreshment structures.
4) On the far side of the restaurant there is a steep but
safe track down to the delectable little beach.
Return by the same route, some obvious variations of
track are available, if desired.
