Pointe La Torche walking and hiking route


Walk Instructions

At the crest is a pre-historic 'allée couverte' (roofed over stone passage). Equally unmissable is the 15th century Nôtre Dame church at Tronoan, with triple spire, stone vaulting and arguably the finest calvary in Brittany.

1. Turn left out of the car park (Calvary on your right hand side), signposted to Chapelle Breuzec. Walk along the minor road for about 1 mile.

Turn right into a 'no through' road with a green cycle waymark (signposted Les Nids de Kerhano). Go straight along passing grazing land. At the end of the roadway (T-Junction) there is a house on the corner.

Cross over to a sandy path and walk towards the Pointe. Keep on this path as it curves left towards the war memorial and then reaches the road and the cafes.

2. Turn right to follow the sandy roadway, soon rising to the Point. There are fine views over Tronoan Beach to the north and Pors Carn Beach to the south, where the less attractive fishing port of St Guénole is also in sight. The waves beating on the rocks are often spectacular and the beaches are popular with local surfers, particularly at weekends. The 'allée couverté' is right on the crest. Walk back to the café area and turn left to retrace steps. Go past the war memorial and a notice concerning the Audierne Bay protected natural site. The broad sandy track is part of GR 34. Follow this track for just over 1 mile. Ignore turnings to left or right; the hamlet to the right is Kerdraffic. Continue, heading for the gables of 3 houses.

3. Just before reaching these houses, turn right 'following a yellow waymark sign' along a minor path, walk alongside the scattered houses with a wire fence on the left. Pass the nearest house and turn left at a vehicle barrier with a GR sign on a concrete post. Carry on along an unsurfaced access roadway serving these houses. Pass the last house.

4. In a short distance turn right, along a minor track with yellow painted sign. Here there are plenty of waymark signs. Follow the edge of the field with a pronounced drainage ditch on the left. Cross a tiny bridge and continue along the edge of the next (sandy) field. Reach a farm track and turn left, by a yellow waymark to pass to the left of the farm, Pen ar Vouëz.

5. 100 yards or so after the buildings, turn right along a waymarked track, initially heading for Tronoan church. The route passes a former farm building before joining the public road. Turn left to return to the car park.
