Walk Instructions
Nappa Hall originates from 1450-60 built as
a fortified Manor House, for the powerful
Metcalfe family. In recent times it has
functioned as a working farm and bed and
breakfast accommodation.
Follow the main road, downhill beyond the church
and The Temperance Hall, turning left into a lane
running alongside the animal feeds factory. This leads
directly to the River Ure, but 20 metres before reaching
the river, swing left making towards a signpost. The
way soon resumes a riverside setting, continuing
downstream to Worton Bridge.
While enjoying the riverside scenery a glimpse to the
left reveals Askrigg, nestling beneath Ellerkin Scar,
and the road to Muker in Swaledale wriggling over
the horizon. Closer to Worton Bridge the castellated
outline of Nappa Hall comes into view.
Emerging from the fields at the bridge turn left
towards a stile on the right - signposted Aysgarth.
Continue along the riverbank, then cross a footbridge
and head towards Nappa Mill Farm (Nappa House
on some maps).
At the farm swing left, walking away from the buildings
along the access road. Immediately before reaching
a bridge hop over the stile walking towards a gate in
the far corner, near a telegraph pole.
Maintain the previous line across the next field to arrive
at a lane. Turn left to walk past Nappa Hall emerging
on a main road - turn left.
Follow the road for a short distance turning right at the
first opportunity, into the quiet hamlet of Nappa Scar.
Seek a stile beyond the last building on the left -
signpost Newbiggin. Walk in an almost straight line
across a dozen fields, to arrive at another tiny hamlet
- Newbiggin. Along the way look for the unmistakable
straight line of the Roman Road, snaking over Wether
Fell, across the valley on the left.
At Newbiggin walk around the small ‘green’ to enter
a lane to the left alongside a large barn. After a few
paces pass cross a bridge and go left, then through
a gated stile on the left, then follow a well-used path
across the field towards a wall angle then follow the
same line to another stile. Pass through a wide gap
in a wall with Askrigg’s rooftops in sight and tread an
obvious route across two more fields.
The exit stile is hidden by trees close to some cottages
but is easily located. At the road swing left, returning
to Askrigg.
