Walk 4 - Alajero and Calvario walking and hiking route

Walk Instructions
A short out and back walk from one of La Gomera’s
larger villages to a distinctive hill capped by a little
chapel. The top of the hill is at an altitude of 2652ft
(808m), providing a superb viewpoint over a great
swathe of countryside and the apparently not far
distant sea.
Walking surfaces comprise minor roads, a broad, easy,
earth/stone roadway and a well-engineered footpath up
the hill. No route finding skills are required. Alajero is a
pleasant village, with its buildings straddling the upper
part of the Barranco de Ereses.
Start Point
If travelling to Alajero by car, park in the area directly
in front of the Town Hall (Ayuntamiento). If using the
bus, get off at the stop by the middle of the three roads
which descend from the bypass into the village. Walk
down that road and continue to the road junction just
after the Bar Columba. Turn left there to join the route
set out from the Town Hall.
Refreshments:
Three bars in the village centre.
From the Town Hall walk down the village street, passing the
end of the church and the Bar de Venezuela. Keep left at a
road junction, passing the school on the right and the Bar de
Alegria on the left.
1. Turn right at the next road junction, just before the Bar
Columba, and continue along a minor road descending gently
past modern housing, building plots and a supermarket.
The Calvario hill is very prominent ahead. After passing the
El Paso Hotel, the roadway soon becomes a tarmac track,
descending to a rudimentary turning circle at the bottom.
2. From here a well constructed stone path climbs steadily to
the summit, a rise of about 400ft. The chapel of San Isidor
has a 1957 date stone and is surrounded by shrubs growing
among the shattered rock surface. An adjacent stone wall
crowns the abrupt cliffs of the south side of the hill; the views
are magnificent. For those inclined to bring a picnic, there are
drinking water points, a stone-built BBQ and a table.
3. The return is by the same route. However, about 60 yards
above the turning circle a diversion to the right along a
tarmacked roadway for 200 yards or so gives views down the
Barranco de Ereses, heading steeply for the sea, and also of
the weathered rock face of the north-east side of the hill.
*This is a beautiful little chapel and well worth a visit. For
those who find walking a problem then it is possible to
take the car (following the instructions and route above)
to the base of the hill, leaving a walk of about 300m up
the stone path to the chapel.
