Walk 5 - Walking to Alberobello walking and hiking route

Walk Instructions

The main road from Coreggia to Alberobello is not an immediately inviting prospect for a walk. But it is not impossible, especially if we choose times such as lunchtime when the traffic is likely to be lighter. It is surprising how many features we see along the way that we have probably not noticed at all when whizzing past in a car!

When walking on roads used by traffic, remember that it is normally safer to walk on the left so we can see the oncoming traffic; but on bends in the road choose the side that ensures we are most visible to traffic.

We leave the HPB car park heading for Coreggia, and at the STOP sign turn left. We follow this road, past a turning on the leaf signposted for ‘Piscini’, to the junction with the main road. Here there is a bus stop and another Piscini sign (approx. 1.5km)

We turn left and soon leave Coreggia. In about 700m we pass a farm on the left whose gateposts are topped with small stone barrels.

In another 300m we come to the narrow stretch of road with traffic lights. Care is needed here to ensure we are visible to whichever set of traffic is approaching.

In another 300m we reach the traffic lights on the outskirts of Alberobello, with a good view of the gradiose entry to the cemetery ahead. From here we can follow the Viale Putignano (half-left) over the level crossing, and go on to our chosen destination.

A magnificent arched hedge fronts a house on the right before reaching the main road.

By quieter roads (4km to the football pitch and Fidelio’s restaurant).

We leave the car park heading for Coreggia, and take the first track left after 200m. We walk between an olive grove and a cherry orchard, and soon can see Alberobello on the hill to the right. In 150m the track bends to the right and shortly afterwards we see a ruined trullo on the left and its modern equivalent, a little square breeze-block house, on the right. In 250m we come to a tarmac road and turn right. Soon after, we follow the road round to the left (S, WP113), ignoring the track to the left. The road rises slightly between 4 neat trulli roofs on our left and 2 more rustic roofs to the right.

Soon we reach a 3-way junction (WP114). Here we go straight on, following the road round as it bends right. At the next 3 way junction (WPO115) we turn left (south). In 100m we reach a T junction with a larger road, SP59. This is the road from Alberobello to Capitolo and Locorotondo (WP116). Here we turn right, heading west. This is a quieter road than the Coreggia road, and we follow it as it winds its way into Alberobello. We have frequent views of the town to our right, as it gradually gets nearer.

We pass some bins on the right, and the road bends left. At a crossroads after 300m we follow the blue sign ahead to Alberobello. We pass the Gardenia mozzarella factory on our right.

As well as the wildflowers that line the route, we also pass a neat hedge of rosemary. 300m later our road bends right as it is joined by a smaller road from the left.

In late May, roses were blooming on this trullo adjoining a modern building, just before the sign ‘Rallentare, 50km/h centro abitato’

In 600m we come to a STOP sign opposite the blank back wall of the football stadium, and in another 170m we reach the main road and Fidelio’s restaurant, WP117. To reach the town centre from here we need to take the main road to our left as it bends round to pass under the railway, then on to our destination. We found this somewhat un-nerving with no footpath under the bridge.
