Walk Instructions

Walk to the riverside and turn left. In 50 m turn left again to head away from the water (red and white GR waymarks) and follow the road for about 80 m. Turn left at a waymarked junction to rise behind the church on an unsurfaced road, soon becoming a track. Turn right to go uphill along a waymarked path, rising steadily through light woodland. The path is well graded, enhanced by stone walled recesses. At the top the ruins of the ‘theatre’ are reached

1) The route continues to the left of the ruins, rising a little through light woodland. In about 200 m turn right to take a lesser path, descending. Join another path and turn left. Our route now continues for a considerable distance along the top of the valley side, easy to follow and passing several large properties, with glimpses of the river below. Most of the time the steep slope is not far away at your left. The path becomes a track. At a crossing of tracks go ahead, following the waymarks. Bend round to the left to rise to the road.

2) Turn left to head for a triangular junction, cross it and take the direction to Grand Castaing and then in 10 m turn left to leave the surfaced road, descending into a valley on a broad track. Keep left at a junction to continue the descent, then at the bottom join another track, turning very sharp right. Follow the track when it turns left at a T-junction, crossing the valley and tiny stream (here it can be very muddy!) After 60 m, when the path turns right, go on straight across along a small foothpath (difficult to see it!), steeply uphill. On top it flattens out and bears left, along the valley edge, and then it bears to the right, and then straight on through woodland.

3) When a broader track joins from the right (a more open area is visible behind it), turn left. After 50 m go straight on (the GR waymarks go to the right). This track appears to be an old cart road, with a former stoned surface evident, predominantly in woodland. Old stone walls and other remnants of former land use are still visible. You pass several entrances to properties.

4) At a minor road go straight across to follow a similar track through an area with more houses before re-entering woodland. Ignore a track on the right, keeping straight on to join a surfaced roadway, close to a farm. Go straight ahead at a road junction, then follow the road when it bends to the left.

5) At the next junction turn sharp right, descending past an old pigeonnier, below to the right. As the road bends to the right, turn left along a track running parallel with the adjacent railway line.

6) In less than 200 m turn right to cross the railway line on a nicely arched metal footbridge, walk past a hamlet and join a road. Turn left for 20m, then turn right at a wayside cross. Turn left in 10m along a surfaced roadway. At a ‘T’ junction, turn left to walk beside the canal for about 300m, reaching the river at the lock where the canal ends. Cross a road and walk along the quayside, under the railway bridge and return to the car park.
