Catbells from Braithwaite walking and hiking route

Walk Instructions

One of the most popular peaks in the Lake District and a fantastic introductory mountain. This walk contains low level ambling, some sections of road walking, steeper mountain trails and some easy scrambling. The views from the top are exceptional for this mid-level peak so the walk is well worth the effort.

Start Point: Braithwaite HPB. Alternatively, you can drive and park at on the roadside parking by point 5 in the below instructions

1. From the HPB head rightwards along the road to the first junction. At the junction head across the road and across the front of the pub car park. There is a little lane that heads through the houses and meets another road. Immediately across the road there is a public footpath which next to a driveway.

2. Follow the footpath along the river to the footbridge, cross the bridge and continue to follow it to the road at ‘Little Braithwaite’.

3. Turn left when you’re on the road continue across the bridge over the river. Once over the bridge take the public footpath on your right and follow the river once more. Follow the river all the way along the river until it hits another road.

4. Care is now needed for the next element as it is a section of road walking. Turn left and head uphill. You will pass the Swinside Inn and continue in the same direction. After a short distance there is a fork in the road, take the right option. Follow this road, the mountain directly ahead is Catbells.

5. Shortly after crossing the Cattle Grid next to the property you will see a public footpath pointing you toward a footpath that starts to make its way up the spine of Catbells. This route has some steep sections and a couple of sections of easy scrambling. If you want to avoid this continue on the road that heads down the right-hand side (Western) of Catbells and use one of the grassy paths that breaks up the side of the fell after a few hundred metres. If following the spine, follow the obvious path all the way to the summit.

6. From the summit, continue southwards down towards the col between Catbells and Maiden Moor. You have a multitude of options here. You can turn left and follow the terrace path around to where you first ascended Catbells, or (as this route describes) you can turn right at the first option to do so.

7. Head down the initially grassy path and when you get to a crossroads of paths turn right once more. Follow this path as it gradually descends and curves back around to a northerly direction. Eventually you’ll descend to meet a path running along a wall. Follow this, you’re now heading back towards Braithwaite.

8. When you reach the tarmac head left through ‘Skelgill’ and follow the road downhill. When you get to the road junction turn right. After a couple of hundred metres you will be back on familiar terrain and you break off the road to the left to re-join the footpath you used on the outward journey. Retrace your steps back to Braithwaite.
