Whinlatter Forest Visitor Centre, accessed from Braithwaite by B5292, the Whinlatter Pass road bus 77/77A. Honister Rambler (high season) from Braithwaite to Whinlatter. Cafe at visitor centre (called "Siskins").

This walk is through one of the oldest forests belonging to the Forestry Commission. The forest is called Whinlatter and Seat How is the summit of the forest at 496m.

Walk Instructions

The forest is tiered woodland and the forest road especially prepared and maintained by Forest Enterprise runs from the Visitors Centre to the area called Tar Barrel Moss. At this point turn right and follow a wide track through a fairly young plantation until you see the cycle track on your right, pass this and you come to the path going up to "Seat How". The path is "V" shaped so you ascend from either side. This design of path using gravel surface will lead you up and across moor type terrain where at times you will feel the peat bog move underneath the surface.

You then enter woodland again following the route in and out of the plantation. This footpath is approximately half mile long. You then find steps leading to the summit of Seat How. Take in the view from this easterly side of the valley incorporating both lakes and surrounding villages, Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite. To return descend the way you arrived and turn right following the path down to the forest road to return to the visitor centre.
