Walk Instructions
The compact Broadland village of Ludham forms
the focal point of this circuit. The village has a
fine old church, attractive boating area at nearby
Womack Water, an inn and the Alfresco tea shop.
Toad Hole Cottage, below How Hill, is a former eel
catcher’s home, now a mini museum of traditional
Broads life. Nearby is the mooring of ‘Electric
Eel’. During the season, visitor excursions among
the extensive reed beds are available on this
environmentally friendly craft.
Apart from a gentle ascent at How Hill, the walk is
level, on good tracks throughout, with minimal use
of roads.
Start/car parking - Close to Ludham Bridge on
A1062, roadside lay-bys with public conveniences,
grid reference 373171.
Refreshments - Inn and Alfresco tea shop at
Ludham.
Walk
Walk towards the bridge, at a ‘public footpath’ sign
turn right to head north on a riverside path on the east
side of the river, passing a long stretch of moorings.
The remains of Neave’s drainage mill are on the far
side of the river in less than one mile. Ahead, a wind
pump with sails and the large building at How Hill can
both be seen. Bend right, by an inlet from the river, and
then left at a junction to return to the river bank. Pass
Turf Fen drainage mill and reach the staithe (moorings)
serving How Hill.
The adjacent thatched broad house is the home of
‘Electric Eel’. Water based wild life is abundant here.
1. Turn right at waymark to pass Toad Hole Cottage,
a former eel catcher’s house, now a mini museum of
traditional Broads life. Continue up the broad access
track to How Hill. Pass the buildings and join a minor
road, opposite the Mill House. Turn left.
2. On reaching a few isolated houses turn right, into a
signposted green land, gently uphill. As the track bends
to the left, turn right in 3-4 metres along a narow
path across the corner of a cultivated field. Continue
on through the next field heading almost towards the
(barely visiable) distant tower of Ludham Church. Join
a grass track on the far side of a hedge, turning right.
In 50m, turn left at telegraphy poles, along a field edge
path. Cross a minor road and continue straight ahead,
keeping the field boundary on the left.
3. Reach a public road, turning right to follow the
roadside path towards Ludham. At the crossroads in
the middle of the village turn right, the Alfresco tea
room is immediately on the right, with the parish
church of St. Catherine opposite.
4. Turn right to take a rising path towards Ludham Hall.
Pass the buildings before turning right at a minor
road. On joining the main road turn left, passing the
Dog Inn to return to Ludham Bridge in approximately
a quarter mile.
