Rambla de las Chozas & Cortijo Grande walking and hiking route


Walk Instructions

Start Point

From HPB reception walk down to the site road. Turn right towards Alfaix bridge.

1. Before the bridge turn sharp left to descend along a minor road. Cross the Rio Jauto via the concrete ford (usually dry) and continue along the road. As the road bends to the right cross the cleared area on the left to follow the track which goes to the right.

2. In 200 yards fork left to commence the steady ascent of the hillside, passing through two abandoned farmhouses. The vegetation is very typical of this area, largely dry scrub with plentiful wild flowers. The high range of the Sierra Cabrera is impressive ahead with the village of Cortijo Cabrera also in view.

3. Reach the top of the rise at 216m. (709ft.). Continue downhill on a broad track, with a ruined farmhouse below to the right; a track joins from the right ignore this, keeping left.

4. On reaching another junction turn left once again, part of the village of Cortijo Grande is in view ahead. The track, now narrower, soon descends twisting and turning to cross a valley bottom. Cross the (usually dry) streambed and bear left to continue, rising up the valley side. Once at the top you will encounter a split junction.

5. Take the right track onto a winding track, eventually keeping left now at the foot of the hillside heading towards Cortijo Grande, keep on this good track. The track will soon descend, coming across a white house on the left. This track winds down into a wide riverbed, take a left onto the bed. Follow this for 1.5 miles until you are met with a minor road which crosses the rambla at a concrete ford.

6. Turn left onto the track, the rambla now to the right of you, once you have reached a ‘T’ junction at a cleared area. Turn left here before turning strongly to the right along a terraced track rising across the hillside. The buildings of the aerodromo are prominent across the valley and there are views down the rambla to its junction with the main Rio de Aguas ahead.

7. Ignore a track on the left and go ahead to reach the top corner of the vast lemon/orange groves. Follow the wide roadway along the edge of the groves, descending gently. Bend to the left as the Rio de Aguas is reached and stay with the roadway along the valley side, soon passing utilitarian agricultural buildings. Keep the high trees to the right of you.

8. At a gap on the right (protected by a chain) take up this track, continuing to the foot of a short ascent to the right. Soon bearing left, now onto a tarmac surface to pass a house on the right. The huge orange groves across the valley should be prominent on your left, offering spectacular views.

9. Finally, keep left at a ‘T’ junction, soon passing scattered dwellings at the fringe of Alfaix. Passing the HPB shop, turn right to return to reception. (Tip: follow the road all the way back, keeping left)
