A day in a canoe drifting down the Dordogne River is a great way to explore one of the most beautiful areas of France. Travel downstream and take in the spectacular sights of châteaux, villages and little old towns. Canoeing in this region is safe and the current does most of the work for you; this makes for a perfect day trip for families or couples.

Experience sights that aren’t visible from elsewhere and enjoy the towering banks, the history and an array of wildlife as you glide over sparkling waters lively with fish, and past riverbanks which are home to herons, kingfishers and dragonflies.

Canoe or kayak hire companies are abundant in the area but it’s also possible to book in at Constant, if you are staying there. The site manager Sonia has teamed up with local rental company Canoë Détente so everything you might need can be provided for you. There is a choice of sizes from single-person kayaks to canoes large enough for two adults and two children. Steven White, the resident Activities Coordinator at Constant, is brilliant at finding all the best areas to explore, and is on hand if you need any help or guidance. The great thing is that from Constant it is really easy to get to the Dordogne, and the huge variety of activities that awaits you there.

Don’t forget to pack food on your excursion, because stopping off for a picnic along the river, with the stunning views of surrounding châteaux and the sun shining down, is one of the best things to do!

Trips down the river can be as long or as short as you fancy and they provide you with the fantastic opportunity to stop when and where you want to if you fancy exploring one of the many medieval villages that line the banks.
