The Solva Woollen Mill, Pembrokeshire

Posted by Luci Ackers on 15 May 2017

The Solva Woollen Mill is located towards the northern end of St Brides Bay, roughly half an hour from Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire.

Having first opened in 1907 it is the oldest working woollen mill in the county and attracts visitors all year round. Its historic looms have been spinning high quality fabric for the past 100 years and its current owners, Tom and Anna, take great pride in its history.

The mill has been a part of Tom’s family for the past 30 years and he oversees the smooth running of all the machines. There is a team of people on site including weavers, tea room and shop assistants.

Anna has worked hard to create a beautiful shop environment that showcases the mill’s intricate creations and a range of other products too. The tearoom sells a number of wonderful homemade goodies, so you can stop for a cuppa while you are browsing.

Over the years the mill has come to be the only one of its kind in Wales to specialise in flat woven flooring. You can see the weavers hard at work while you’re visiting and it’s really fascinating to watch the process take place. Outside the original waterwheel was replaced back in 2007 and now there is a nice seating area out there as well.

How to find it

They are open Monday – Friday year-round. But opening times vary depending on the season, so do check the website before setting off.

Visit the Solva Woollen Mill website here.

The mill is located just north of the village of Solva off the A487. At the bridge in Lower Solva take the turning up the valley, and the mill is about a mile along the valley. It’s under an hour from St. Brides.
