Hitting a rocky patch: the Algar Sêco formation

Posted by Luci Ackers on 14 April 2016

The Algarvian coast is not all about long, sandy beaches – glorious as they are. There are plenty of craggy coves and rocky inlets to break up the monotony(!).

If you’re looking for something a little different, the Algar Sêco is a spectacular rock formation that is definitely worth a visit while you’re in the town of Carvoeiro, near Rocha Brava.

In fact you can walk there in 10 minutes, thanks to the cliff walk pictured below:

This craggy and unusual rock face rises from the sea only a short distance from the town’s main square.

You’ll come across a little car park, right on the edge of the cliffs, and a restaurant/hotel – the Algar Sêco Parque – that overlooks the coastline: nice enough, but not what you’re there for.

A set of stairs (pictured at top) disappears downwards from the car park and you’ll find yourself descending amongst the grottoes, archways and caves. It’ll open out into a natural amphitheatre where the waves lap at the rocks around you. Remember to wear good shoes if you’re planning to venture down into this mysterious world of pools, tunnels and caves – including the A Boneca (or ‘Doll’) Cave, with spectacular seascapes to be enjoyed through the ‘doll’’s eyes.

And down there you’ll find the Boneca Bar: not the cheapest eatery in the Algarve, but the views are up there with the very best.
