Keen fisher?

The River Ericht and its tributaries in Perthshire have a great stock of salmon. From May to October the Ericht enjoys prolific runs of salmon and July onwards is likely to yield the best results.

Nestled and flowing through gorges that have been cut through the Scottish countryside, the river is bordered by beautiful banks which provide ideal spots for angling, right in the shallows at the water's edge. Witch's Pool sits just back from the river bank, the water within easy distance and lovely woodland views.

The Ericht forms at the confluence of the Blackwater and Ardle and is around 10 miles long, running south through Blairgowrie. It is fed by smaller tributaries and not only do salmon flourish in these waters but also brown trout, sea trout and grilse. A very successful restocking programme began in 1992 and the river has gone from strength to strength.

The Ericht and its tributaries are especially good for salmon; currents below the surface wear deep holes in the rock and these make ideal salmon lies. The fish like clean, fresh water, with a rocky riverbed and deep pools. Young salmon also take advantage of the food sources – where there's grassy banks and low hanging branches, insects will often drop into the river. The Ericht is the ideal habitat. We have our own fishing beat for the guests at Witch's Pool and it provides almost a mile and a half of fantastic fishing opportunities.

If you are in the area and fancy getting stuck in yourself, please remember to get a permit for fishing in the area you are in, or a licence from where it is you are staying.

A rod licence is available for the guests of Witch's Pool by the day or week, excluding Sundays. The fishing season is from mid April to mid October and the lodges are available during this period. There will also be a ghillie on hand for advice and assistance. To find out how to stay in one of these fully-furnished, stunning properties, right in the heart of Perthshire, simply pop your details in at the bottom of the page to request a brochure.
