The Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery is located in the centre of the city, roughly 40 minutes from Upper Norton. There is always a wonderful programme of events going on throughout the year but a big one this winter is 'Valhalla – Life and Death in Viking Britain'.

As of 2014, the museum is located in the town's former Music Hall which is a Victorian building that now has six fantastic galleries, one of which is devoted to the special exhibition programme. 'Valhalla – Life and Death in Viking Britain' will be running from 8th February to 5th June 2016 and promises to be a fascinating insight into our history and the culture of the ancestors who lived here before us.

Norse themes in TV and film are becoming more and more popular at the moment, with the stories surrounding the Vikings beginning to really captivate people's imaginations. The exhibition aims to bring a better understanding of their beliefs and way of life. At the centre of things will be information on Shropshire's personal Viking history and the story of the notorious adventurer Hastein who ventured up the River Severn.

As you explore the exhibition you'll see archaeological findings and an array of interesting artefacts, you'll learn about the latest research and discover the history of the Scandinavian Vikings that came to our shores in the 8th century. The exhibition provides the opportunity to see what our ancestors believed about Valhalla and the afterlife and how they commemorated their dead. The Hungate and Coppergate excavations from York will be the key case studies here and you will see objects from domestic life as well as replicas from extravagant boat burials, and a range of remains.

There is a great selection of interactive activities for youngsters too, including storytelling and rune stamping, so they can really enjoy learning about the myths and tales of the past. Admission to the exhibition is included in the general admission charge to the museum and you can take a look at opening times on the website here
