Ludlow, the food capital of Shropshire

Ludlow, the food capital of Shropshire

Shropshire is one of England's most rural areas. Its sparse population makes it quiet and relaxed, tucked away on the English-Welsh border.

Far enough from other places to have remained comparatively unspoilt, Shropshire has been a place of relaxation since Roman times. Here you will find pretty little market towns to explore nestled among the idyllic hills and valleys that characterise this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Toward the south of the county you have lots of traditional towns and villages, one of the most popular being Ludlow.

Shropshire has developed a remarkable reputation for fine food and local produce. The setting really lends itself to natural, organic and homegrown goodness and Shropshire prides itself on being able to offer 'proper' fresh food. The county celebrates its rural and agricultural heritage.

Ludlow is just one of many towns that are laden with markets, fresh fruit and veg stalls, butchers and delicatessens, not to mention award winning local pubs and great tea-rooms. Sometimes referred to as Shropshire's gastronomic capital, Ludlow is great for dining out. Invested in maintaining the traditional, English country vibe, its restaurants are supported by the numerous markets and food fairs, speciality shops and delis which all, similarly, serve good quality, local food.

The Ludlow Food Festival is a main highlight of the town. This event has been celebrated for years and attracts people from miles around to enjoy all sorts of events, workshops and classes as well as a great selection to taste and buy. In 2016 the festival takes place on the 9th, 10th and 11th September and there will be more than 180 fantastic independent food and drink producers arriving to set up their stalls inside the walls of Ludlow Castle. Throughout the town you'll find a number of food-related events taking place over the same weekend. There are trails, markets and talks. Enjoy!

Experience Shropshire's heritage for yourself and stay at Upper Norton, just 15 minutes from the foody capital Ludlow. Find out how by simply popping your details in at the bottom of the page.
