Walk Instructions
At the foot of the drive turn right and follow the road to Point 1 (NN507071) - the T junction to the Loch Katrine Pier in approx 400m (6 mins).
Keep left here and continue around Loch Achray, either on the road or the fishermens lochshore path.
Pass the Ben Venue car park and the Achray Hotel in approx 600m (9 mins).
Continue to follow the road around the loch and in a further 600m (9 mins) there is a white cottage on your right (the old Toll House), then in another 250m (4 mins) at a right hand bend in the road you come to Point 2 (NN512061) - where a stone wall and three wooden posts mark the start of path on your left. Follow this path above the loch through birch woods.
Ignore two paths on your right (the first unmarked, the second with green wayposts) and continue across a metal bridge to meet a forestry track at Point 3 (NN515061) - a distinct bend with a sign ‘Achray Youth Campsite', in approx 400m (6 mins). Turn left along this track and continue to follow it along the shoreline of the loch.
In 600m (9 mins) ignore the track on your right, and carry straight on to cross a cattle grid in a further 400m (6 mins).
Note: Beyond this cattle grid there are sometimes cattle wandering freely, so keep dogs on a lead.
In 500m (7-8 mins) you will come to Point 4 (NN529063) - a T junction at Achray Farm. Turn left here, through the gate and the farmyard (which may be muddy) and in 500m (7-8 mins) cross the Black Water by an arched bridge. The Byre Inn is on your left in another 100m.
Return
Either retrace your steps or, for variation, follow one of the tracks shown between Point 3 & Point 4 on the map.
A good option is to return to Point 3, turn left to follow the track with green wayposts uphill to the ‘Three Beinns car park' (about 400m, 6 mins), then, still following green wayposts, turn right on to the path running downhill.
In another 400m (6 mins), you will come to a fork in the path. Either direction will take you back to the main route in about 1 min.
Note: Returning along the road on the north shore of Loch Achray is not recommended for pedestrians as it is narrow with numerous blind bends, can be busy and has no pavement.
