Every summer the Festival Interceltique takes place in the Brittany seaport Lorient. The festival is a celebration of Brittany's rich heritage and it brings together artists from across the Celtic world.

What's it all about?

Brittany's Celtic history is closely associated with that of the UK, particularly Cornwall and Wales; all three areas are bordered by the Celtic Sea and are considered three of the official Celtic nations, a group of nations where strong cultural traits have survived from Celtic times.

The Festival Interceltique is dedicated to a range of cultural traditions from across these Celtic nations. Every summer Brittany is host to an explosion of music, dance and art such as painting, theatre, sculpture and traditional artisan. The festival is a coming-together of talent and tradition in a celebration that lasts a number of days each August.

When is it, and what to expect?

Between the 7th and 16th of August 2015 Brittany is welcoming its 44th Festival Interceltique and is expecting 700,000 visitors over the course of 10 days. There are reportedly 5000 performers, events and shows to look forward to and it promises to be a memorable celebration. The festival traditionally kicks off with a Breton seafood supper down at the Port de Pêche where there will be stalls and music. On the first Sunday a huge parade sweeps the streets of Brittany and performers from all over the Celtic world get involved, wearing national costume, playing traditional music, dancing and singing.

Get stuck in

Throughout the festival you have ample opportunity to get involved and learn about the different cultures, as well as pick up new skills and get stuck into classes and workshops. There is the 'Village Celtique' in the centre of the city where you can explore a number of stalls and buy food, crafts, clothes and lots more. There is so much going on that everyone will find something they enjoy, and most of the events are free, taking place at a wide range of locations.
