Dark Skies Festival 2017

Dark Skies Festival 2017

Thanks to their protected status National Parks remain some of the darkest areas of countryside in the UK. Light pollution, which is generated by built up areas, is kept to a minimum for the preservation of the plants and animals that live here. This allows the night skies to remain wonderfully clear and always full of stars, (as long as the clouds hold off!), perfect for stargazing.

Dark Skies Festivals

This year marks the second instalment of the annual Dark Skies Festival, and it has already grown in size. Both the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors are involved for the second year running, and this year the South Downs National Park has joined in the fun as well.

The festival will be running from the 18th – 26th February and all kinds of events are taking place across the three National Parks. You can get involved in bike rides, night walks, stargazing parties, children's activities and much more.

The idea behind the week-long event is to encourage a greater appreciation for our wonderful skies and to help people of all ages discover just how beautiful they are. Our National Parks are a huge part of the UK and they're here to be enjoyed. On a good day it is possible to see as many as 2000 stars in areas like these and the week will offer you the opportunity to learn a little more about the incredible constellations above your head.

A lot of the events are bookable so take a look at the website to find out dates, times, prices and locations:

Her love of writing started from a young age and on rainy days nothing beats curling up in a secret corner with a good book.
