Wallace & Gromit's BIG Bake is an annual event that takes place in December and returns each year to help raise money for Wallace & Gromit's Children's Charity. The Charity is a national organisation that supports hundreds of projects at hospitals throughout the UK. The children's charity was set up over a decade ago and helps to provide life-saving medical equipment, free family accommodation, therapy programmes, facilities and care. Wallace & Gromit's BIG Bake is a way for people to raise money at home, school or in the work place for this worth while cause.

Homepride was this year's main sponsor and they encouraged their loyal fans to get involved by baking whatever they could. There are all sorts of downloadable resources on the BIG bake website:

Kings Arms, a pub in the Yorkshire Dales that is famous for having been the filming location for the BBC's All Creatures Great and Small, decided to take matters into its own hands and host its very own baking competition to raise money. Iain Watters, 2014 Great British Bake Off contestant, was one of the charity's star bakers and his Wensleydale soda bread recipe (found here) was used by the Kings Arms as the basis for the competition. Each of the contestants entered a loaf they'd baked in their own accommodation, and kept their fingers crossed. The top three bakers won themselves dinner for two at the Kings Arms and first place received a bottle of champagne on top of that. Jo from the Askrigg Village Kitchen ( was on hand to help judge.

Being close to the birth place of this creamy cheese, we thought the Wensleydale soda bread was a very fitting recipe, and even got the Wensleydale Creamery involved too ( – taking the contestants on a tour around the visitor centre and cheese-making factory.

The event was a huge success and everyone had 'A Grand Day Out'. There were some great recipe alterations and additions to spark the judges' interest, including a rather special Apple and Walnut variety. The three winners were as follows:

2nd David Stanistreet and Steve Ankers

3rd Anne Soar

And a huge well done to each of them!

A spread of cheeses and goodies was provided for lunch, so everyone could pick and try each other's loaves. And the pub was decked out in Christmas decorations, making the whole day really special.

So far over £1000 has been raised by the efforts of everyone involved. So thank you for everyone who supported the day. We're still collecting and will get the donations off to Wallace & Gromit's Children's Charity ASAP!
