Dénia Castle, Costa Blanca

Dénia Castle, Costa Blanca

Dénia, a city located on the east coast of Spain, is important for its harbour, which provides connections to the Balearic Islands. It sees a lot of recreational traffic and offers a large range of marine services, combining commercial business with tourism. But is is not just in recent years that this city has played an important part in Mediterranean economy – the array of architecture around the harbour reflects the town's prosperity through history.

Dénia Castle sits high on a rocky cliff overlooking the city and with excellent views out over the Costa Blanca and out to sea. Its design dates back to the Moorish period and it was originally built between the 11th and 12th centuries. It has since been added to, with 15th century towers, 16th century defence systems and the 17th century Governor's Palace.

You can climb up to the castle via little stone streets and steps from the town centre and the views that greet you at the top are definitely worth the trek. The history of the place will unfold as you walk; old architecture is visible and the remains of houses and forts from Roman times have been excavated on its slopes. There is also a little archaeological museum to visit in one of the castle buildings half way up which displays the local finds.
