Hidcote is an interesting National Trust-owned Arts and Crafts garden located in the Cotswolds.

The talented horticulturalist Major Lawrence Johnston moved to the Hidcote estate in the early 1900s. The area had connections with the rising Arts and Crafts movement and this inspired Johnston to turn his surrounding fields into a garden. By 1910 he had begun to lay the key features, and things evolved from there.

He implemented the technique of outdoor 'rooms' where each section has its own character and points of interest. Different themed 'rooms' are separated by a series of box hedges and stone walls. Topiaries, fountains and a stunning range of plants feature throughout and there is a wonderful kitchen garden from which visitors can try the fresh produce grown on the estate.

Many of the plants that you still see today were carefully chosen by Johnston and in order to keep his spirit alive and the garden as he intended, very few of them are labelled.

This is a fantastic place to explore, with surprises around every corner and something to see no matter the season. The gardens surround the 17th century manor house and you can wend your way from it along narrow pathways and peer down magnificently designed vistas as you explore.

Sit for a while enjoying the colours or pay a visit to one of the two cafés for a pick-me-up cuppa and some home cooked goodies.

Luci loves getting out and about for a good cycle ride or easy-going walks in the countryside, and thoroughly enjoyed the time she previously spent working for the National Trust. Her love of writing started from a young age and on rainy days nothing beats curling up in a secret corner with a good book.
