Chatsworth House, Derbyshire

Chatsworth House lies on the banks of the River Derwent in the heart of the Peak District and is home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. This historic house has plenty to offer with over 30 rooms to explore and 1000 acres of parkland that was mostly designed by Capability Brown in the 18th century. It has also been home to film productions such as The Duchess and The Wolfman, along with being credited as the inspiration for Mr Darcy's House, Pemberley, and later used in the adaptations Pride and Prejudice and the BBC's Death Comes to Pemberley.

This magnificent house is open for visitors to explore around 30 rooms including the painted hall, sculpture gallery, state rooms, recently restored sketch galleries and elegant bedrooms. Chatsworth is home to one of Europe's most significant art collections, with artefacts, ceramics, sculptures and more decorating the rooms. As you wander you will be able to see the fascinating Devonshire collection and the interesting architecture, both of which have been developed over the course of five centuries.

The house stands in over 100 acres of beautiful gardens. Explore the different areas and discover the kitchen garden and the maze, pretty water features and elegant sculptures. Wander the five miles of walks to see the lovely range of flowers, interesting plants and rare trees, streams and ponds. These gardens have evolved over 450 years and have plenty to show for it. Hunt out the farmyard, first opened in 1973 and a firm favourite with the younger guests. Let little ones interact with the animals and learn as they play through daily activities, demonstrations, animal handling and a woodland adventure playground.

Chatsworth House is the setting for a constantly changing range of exhibitions; 2014 saw 'Chatsworth in Wartime', which marked the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Here are some of the upcoming exhibitions

Many exciting events are also held year-round at Chatsworth including the annual Florabundance Festival, horse trials, food and drink fairs, Easter family fun and the famous 'Christmas at Chatsworth'. The house is festively decorated and events include a Christmas market, carols, wreath making, foodie evenings and children's nativity performances. There really is something for everyone here.
