In the midst of Los Alcornocales Natural Park is the interesting little village of Castellar de la Frontera. This fortified town in the province of Cádiz is located within medieval fortress walls and has a long history, throughout which it was fought over a number of times due to its strategic and enviable position perched high on a cliff.

Having been abandoned in the 1960s, the residents were relocated to the newly developed Nuevo Castellar, which was built nearby. Now Castellar de la Frontera is more touristy, there are a number of little shops and places to eat, plus a small market most days during the summer. Quaint old houses and gardens enclosed by cobbly stone walls are etched into the rocky hillside climbing towards the old castle. Wander up the narrow streets to the top and from here you'll enjoy fantastic panoramic views out over the surrounding mountainous landscape as well as the reservoir that is located just below the village.

The huge reservoir was formed by the river Guadarranque and walks in this area, through the cork forests of the Alcornocales Natural Park are brilliant for birds and wildlife. The main industries here are still agriculture and farming, with the beautiful cork oak groves providing a source of income. Take your time to wander through the native forest and admire the landscape.

Stay in the Costa del Sol and discover all these place for yourself. Follow the link below to find out how.
