Barnham Broom

Norfolk, England

Wells-next-the-Sea walking and hiking route

Walk Instructions

Start Point

Face the sea and turn left along a broad track at the seaward edge of the car park, with woodland on the right. This is part of the Norfolk Coast Path. Continue past a waymarked gate, then along the edge of a boating lake.

1. One hundred metres after the gate, go left at a waymarked fork, passing a Holkham National Nature Reserve board. Turn right at a ‘T’ junction to continue along a fine track by the edge of the well varied woodland of the nature reserve, with abundant bird and plant life. Go through a gap beside a gate to continue to Holkham Gap, about two miles from the car park. (A sharp right turn here gives access to the beach).

2. Turn left to walk to the main road along Lady Anne’s Drive, an estate road with car parking on each side. Cross the main road, the Victoria Inn is to the right with the Ancient House tea shop approximately 40m. to the left, behind other estate buildings. Walk along the access drive towards the Hall.

3. Go through the formal entrance gateway and turn left immediately along a broad track through the woodland. Go through a gate with unusual fastenings, continuing to a junction of five tracks. Take the first track on the left, a surfaced roadway leading directly through Mousehill Plantation to East Lodge. Pass the Lodge and follow a broad, tree-lined unsurfaced road to its junction with A149, at a sharp bend.

4. Walk along the roadside pavement, passing the local community hospital. Leave the main road as it bends to the right. Go straight ahead through a residential area, passing a Congregational church and public conveniences on the left. Opposite the Edinburgh Inn turn left. This is the principal shopping street of Wells, Staithe Street, leading directly to the Quay, with the Tourist Information Centre en route. Turn left at the Quayside.

5. Turn right, past the Harbourmaster’s office, to return to the car park along the long, straight embankment. (To finish the walk with a ride on the adjacent railway might be tempting, particularly to those walking with children!).
