Nordic walking in Britain

Walk this way!

Why should we all take up Nordic walking? Everything you didn't know you needed to know about this energetic new trend.

Discover Dorset in a whole new way. Down at Langton House we've found the perfect way to explore Dorset's incredible countryside. Though Nordic walking is often associated with countries of a colder climate (as the name suggests), it turns out this vigorous walking technique is very transferrable! It's just as enjoyable in England's southern regions.

Originally a training method for cross-country skiers, Nordic walking uses specially designed walking poles to harness the power of the upper body to propel you forward as you walk. The poles are similar to those used in cross-country skiing, but shorter. Removable rubber tips can cover the hard metal ends meaning they can be used on a range of surfaces at any time of year. This exercise is a whole body workout that gets arms, legs and joints moving, muscles working and the heart pumping. It also enables you to really take in all those magnificent views. It's said to be hugely beneficial for both the body and soul; strengthening the heart and circulatory system, targeting back problems and even reducing symptoms of stress!

Suitable for people of all ages, Nordic walking can be adaptable for all fitness levels and can be anything from a gentle walk for those with health concerns, to workout walks for improving fitness and toning the body. The NHS has even reported that regular Nordic walking can lower the risk of illnesses like heart disease and type 2 diabetes (read their article here).

You can find out more about the activity, or join a group or class near you here and here.

At Langton House we are lucky enough to have a brilliant network of walks criss-crossing the surrounding Isle of Purbeck and the nearby Jurassic coast, and we've mapped them all out for you! So if you're coming to stay remember to pack your poles and a pair of walking boots. The South West Coast Path is easy to reach and you can walk as much or as little of it as you fancy. Our very own walking guide Andy Pedrick has been taking visitors on wonderful walks around Langton for around four years now. Having recently tried his hand at Nordic walking he has said that if there is enough interest Langton might start introducing Nordic walking to the list of walks activities! So watch this space.

This area of the country is famous for its Jurassic heritage and the coastline is protected as a World Heritage Site. Luckily Andy knows all the best places to explore. He packs his walks full of information about the geology and the history of the area and knows all the hidden spots for fossil hunting or viewpoints for photo opportunities.

Take the opportunity to explore this coastline with Andy; his walks currently take place on Fridays and you can find out how to stay at Langton yourself by popping your details in at the bottom of the page.
