Keeping busy in the Yorkshire Dales | Visit the Wensleydale Creamery

Heritage, taster sessions and a whole lot of cheesy goings-on...

The Creamery in Hawes is the birthplace of Yorkshire Wensleydale and is the ideal destination for all cheese lovers and fans of Wallace and Gromit!

Visit the Wensleydale Cheese Visitor Centre and learn about the history of this famous cheese in the creamery museum, discover where it all began and how the art of making it has evolved over the years.

On certain days of the week you can watch the experts at work making the cheese and see for yourself what goes into the production process before you head to the shop and deli for the chance to sample all the different varieties. In addition to the cheese there is also a great selection of fruit cakes, artisan oils, crackers and chutneys for sale. The gift shop has a wide range of hampers, locally sourced goodies like biscuits and jams and lots of novelty Wallace and Gromit merchandise - characters famous for their love of this particular cheese.

When you're feeling in need of a pick-me-up after all your shopping, you have the choice of two brilliant venues for a drink and a bite. The 1897 Coffee Shop has a wonderful panoramic view over the Yorkshire Dales and is perfect for a cup of tea and a slice of lovely homemade cake. Alternatively, if you fancy a relaxing lunch, Calvert's restaurant has a great reputation and a delicious menu created with local ingredients.

The Creamery is open all year round. The Visitor Centre and gift shop are generally open 9am – 5pm and the Museum and Cheese making Gallery 10am – 4pm, plus parking at the Creamery is free. The winter opening times do vary and the cheese isn't made every day so it is best to contact The Creamery for further details or check the website!
