This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter.

And how better to celebrate than by releasing her latest book?

It has been over 80 years since Beatrix Potter's last 'Tale' was published, but it seems that this beloved children's author is still surprising us with new stories. The Tale of Kitty in Boots was discovered more than 100 years after being written in 1914 and is due to be published posthumously in September 2016.

The manuscript was discovered by editor Jo Hanks who, during research, found a reference to a letter from Potter to her publisher, Warne. Following this lead to the Warne archive, Hanks discovered a manuscript written by Potter, that was accompanied by two rough sketches. It was clear that the manuscript was intended for publication though, as Potter explains to her publisher, interruptions kept arising at the time.

In her words this latest story is about 'a well-behaved prim black Kitty cat, who leads rather a double life'; it promises all the entertainment we've come to love in the Beatrix Potter tales and even features appearances from some well-know characters: Peter Rabbit, Mr. Toad and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle.

Beatrix Potter wrote and illustrated all of her own works. As this latest tale was still in manuscript form upon its rediscovery, other means were necessary for the illustrations. Jo Hanks explains that Quentin Blake was the obvious choice, his illustrations are iconic and are often linked to stories of mischievous, rebellious characters. He seems perfect for the task and the new book is sure to be full of character!

The Lake District was a favourite place for Beatrix Potter from a young age. She spent a large amount of her childhood here during summer holidays and fell in love with its stunning landscapes, the flora and fauna. This would go on to inspire many aspects of her beloved stories. As she got older she bought properties in the Lake District, the most famous being Hill Top Farm, now in the care of the National Trust. If you are interested in visiting make sure to stop off at the Beatrix Potter Gallery which is hosting a new exhibition of original illustrations this year. The World of Beatrix Potter is also close by, on the shores of Lake Windermere, and is celebrating its 25th year this year.

Stay in the Lake District yourself and discover why this beautiful National Park was so inspirational for one of our favourite authors. Follow the link below to find out how you can stay in Merlewood Mansion.

Luci loves getting out and about for a good cycle ride or easy-going walks in the countryside, and thoroughly enjoyed the time she previously spent working for the National Trust. Her love of writing started from a young age and on rainy days nothing beats curling up in a secret corner with a good book.
