Biella - Passion Play in Sordevolo weekend

This "Passion Play" was first performed more than 4 centuries ago , a unique re-enactment of the 'Passion of Christ' through the streets of Sordevolo (a village near Biella). Sordevolo, a town of 1300 inhabitants, is located at an altituded of 650 in the hills north of Biella. This area of Italy, known as the 'Biellese' is a province that covers an area of about 930 km/2 and is part of the region of Piedmont. Its stunning and unspoilt scenery includes mountains, lakes, parks, nature reserves, castles, DOC vineyards, lush rolling hills and medieval villages.

In this natural scene of hills, woods and mountains, every 5 years the event of the Passion is performed in the form of ancient popular theatre. The show takes place in an open amphitheatre that turns a corner of Sordevelo into a corner of Jerusalem: the Cenacle, the garden of olives, the Sanhedrim, the Praetorium of Pilate, the palace of Herod, Calvary. The seating area holds up to 2300 spectators, it is covered and equipped with comfortable ergonomic seats.

The Passion play, an amazing theatrical experience performed by the inhabitants of Sordevolo is an expression of what is known as popular theatre. It has been staged in this charming village for over two hundred years, and is based on the old text written by Giuliano Dati of Florence in the 16th century. In the past it was performed in the Coliseum in Rome every Good Friday. It is a mystery how the script of this Passion play came to Sordevolo, maybe the hands of a Saint, a merchant or an adventurer brought the text from the banks of the Tiber to the banks of the river Elvo in Sordevolo. The fact remains that four hundred actors parade through the centre of the village before the play begins. For 3 months of the summer about 1300 people whose hearts are inflamed by a single passion, the Passion play. All the local families, children included, participate in the preparation of the play, building the scenery, making the costumes, rehearsing and passing down the roles from one generation to the next.

The evening performances are particularly beautiful as the lighting effects add an extra charm to this unique performance.

Today Thailand is one of the world's premier holiday destinations and up until recently golf has been its best kept secret. Since then its popularity has increased even further and new courses continue to be built with the help of some of the world's top golf course designers.

This unique holiday not only offers a selection of international golf courses but gives you an insight into the beauty of Thailand whilst enjoying the delights of a 3 day River Kwai cruise. Nile Treasures in style

3rd Sept - Few places left!

Our tour of Egypt and its treasures has been one of the most popular tours since we first introduced it over 13 years ago, and judging from the comments we've received, many have said this is the best tour they've ever had. The main reason for this is the number of private tours we arrange (where you are the only visitors on the site), that most meals and excursions are already included in the price, and that overall, the organisation, service and attention you receive from our representatives is second to none.

But of course it's what you visit that really makes this tour so special. Every day you will see ancient sites and amazing monuments, from magnificent Sakkara and the temples at Karnak to stunning Abu Simbel, and from the treasures of Tutankhamun at the Egyptian Museum to one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Sphinx and Pyramids at Giza.

Abu Simbel, Kasr Ibrim, Philae and Edfu temples, the Valley of the Kings and the Colossi of Menmon - you will see them all during your Nile and Nubian cruises, and more. At Aswan you board your Dahabia for a leisurely sail along this lifeblood river of Egypt, seeing an abundance of monuments and many of the most famous and well known temples along its shoreline. At Thebes, after visiting the Colossi, you have a full day discovering the wonderful temple complex at Karnak, surely one of the highlights of the trip. You will start your Nubian cruise at Abu Simbel and marvel at how these temples were saved from the depths of Lake Nasser, before sailing through Lake Nasser visiting several temples along the way.

At this point you will think it could not get any better - but of course it does. Flying back to Cairo, we visit the Rafaiai Mosque and the Khan El Khalili Bazaar, followed by the magnificent Cairo museum. As many Bondholders have said before, this really could be the most memorable holiday you will ever have.

Oberammergau

Gather round. The time has come to tell a story. A story of life. A story of death. A story of eternal love and unconditional faith.

During the 17th century an era of darkness descended over Europe. As the Thirty Years War was raging across Germany, so too was a deadly, highly infectious disease sweeping its way furiously over the continent. For a time, the remote village of Oberammergau successfully kept the plague at bay. However, despite their unyielding vigilance, the Black Death eventually struck the small community in the summer of 1632 following the return of a form resident. Soon, many of Oberammergau's inhabitants succumbed to the fatal disease.

In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great

After a successful, Mummies to Montgomery WWII tour in February 2010, Lisa, from the HPB tenancy in Hania, Crete has researched and organized a thrilling adventure theme week exploring the magic of Egypt.

This bespoke theme week for HPB encapsulates a time line of discovery ranging through millennia. From the pharaonic dynasties, the footsteps of the ancient Greek warrior king Alexander the Great, the aesthetics of the Greco-Roman empire, exciting discoveries of buried treasures and explorers in the 19th & 20th C to the grandeur of the Nile River, Egypt's silent lifeline. The arduous fierce fighting desert campaigns of WWII to the more modern day accomplishments as the Republic of Egypt, brings us up to date in this intrepid traveller tour. We shall encompass fascinating history and archaeology, a tour of the senses of this amazing giant of a country in the Middle East.

As with all of Lisa's theme weeks the itinerary is a travel through time, the story of a nation, its population and those who coveted and passed through up to present day.

The Shroud of Turin is a centuries old linen cloth that bears the image of a crucified man. A man that millions believe to be Jesus of Nazareth. Is it really the cloth that wrapped his crucified body, or is it simply a medieval forgery? Modern science has completed hundreds of thousands of hours of detailed study and intense research on the Shroud. It is, in fact, the single most studied artifact in human history, and we know more about it today than we ever have before. The holy shroud museum offers a fascinating insight into the shroud from historical, scientific, artistic and spiritual points of view.

On average the shroud is put on display once every 20 years, the last time was a special showing for the millenium in 2000.

The shroud was for many years the property of the Royal Family of Savoy and during this tour we combine the chance to see the shroud for yourself with a tour of the Savoy's Royal residence, the "Venaria Reale", on the outskirts of Turin. This beautiful residence and gardens known as the Italian Versailles has has just reoppend after an extensive eight year renovation project and is a UNESCO world heritage site.

A Taste of Sicily

To our minds, Italy's dark horse is unquestionably Sicily, cursed by an unfair stereotype that vanishes almost the minute your plane sets down or your boat touches the shore. Speak to anyone about anything and you will be met with a smile that manages to be shy and dazzling at the same time. Miles and miles of vineyards rivaling any in Tuscany or Piedmont, endless olive groves sprouting from emerald-green carpets of grass, veritable forests of shiny citrus and fruit trees, rugged silver mountains, all against a backdrop of the deep blue sea. Sicily has a massive amount of world-class art, ranging from Greek to Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Norman, French and Spanish, and some of it enjoys the most astonishing setting, abandoned on a hillside or nestled into a deserted cove. There is something very ancient about Sicily, more than in Rome or Ravenna or Pompeii, and the thing we like the most about it is its unpretentiousness, the matter of fact, day-to-day atmosphere that turns all this history into a landscape as natural as a prickly pear blooming alongside a country road.

Israel: Pilgrimage to the Holy Land

Israel is truly a destination with something for everyone. The age of most of its cities is counted not in decades or centuries but in millennia. The ingenuity and complexity of some of the historical gems have won them a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Jerusalem is an incomparable highlight that is both historical and spiritual. Israel is not a large country however it contains an unimaginable wealth of natural landscapes and historical treasures.

HPB Travel Club offers a selection of tours, many exclusive to Bondholders, using the services of reputable tour operators to provide a wealth of destinations at value for money prices for Bondholders, friends and relatives.
