Wallcreepers, woodpeckers & waterbirds

Constant, The Dordogne, France

Late autumn may not be the time one normally associates with birding in the Dordogne area but the spoils are there if you know where to look. Perhaps the greatest 'prize' are the small number of Wallcreepers which regularly winter amongst the Vézère riverside cliffs. They are occasionally accompanied by their alpine associates the Alpine Accentor which can hop about rather incongruously amongst picnic areas like their urban cousins the Dunnock! However like the Wallcreeper they show little fear of man and can often be closely approached. There is a huge Common Crane migration through SW France each spring and autumn.

You'll be supported by experienced teachers who use a tried and tested repertoire of songs that will have you singing out with confidence in no time, and there will definitely be a Scottish song or two. During the week we'll do some busking (for charity) and build towards a performance to show other guests and locals what you've been up to.

Driven by sweeping valleys, pockmarked by slate-capped fells and crisscrossed by drystone walls, it's a place that's packed with more natural drama and rich history than almost anywhere else in England.

This week is an opportunity to explore in a very relaxed way some of those moments when life and faith seem to coincide. To explore what (if anything) we believe and why. To face those problems which all of us meet on the way and what help there is to encourage us on whatever spiritual journey may be ours. With retired Church of England bishop John Richardson as your guide this is an opportunity to share in beautiful surrounds a spiritual heritage which some of us find wonderful beyond words - and there will be many laughs!

Food and Wine

Physkos Apartments, Turkey

Our aim on this Theme Week is to share our lifestyle, the way we cook, drink and enjoy life. We believe that what makes life worth living is hidden in the small details we add. We do contemporary Turkish Mediterranean cooking and believe in simple tastes. Food is prepared using the freshest organic ingredients grown in our own gardens and bought from the local markets. The best flavours are achieved by only using produce that is 'in season' and by adding the correct combination of herbs and seasonings.

Each day you'll have the chance to appreciate stunning views and traditional local food. Restaurants have been chosen to reflect the tastes, simplicity and naturally organic food that the typical Cretan family enjoys. Adding this to the diverse history and topography you'll see and discover on the island, it's a perfect way to appreciate the good life Greek style. Easier Footsteps

Panorama Villas, Crete (HPB Tenancy)

Our Footsteps in Crete walking weeks have been very successful and to give the opportunity again to less experienced walkers who prefer a more relaxed way to explore the wonderful countryside, we are pleased to re-introduce the Rambling in Crete Theme Week for 2012. While incorporating a couple of very popular walks from previous Rambling in Crete weeks, we have added three new walks. Anyone who has been to Crete knows that it is a mountainous country and there is no escaping those hills! So we have aimed to do all the uphill walking at the beginning of the walks while everyone is fresh, and the downhill walking after lunch or once the day has warmed up a little. Open to all ages, although participants should be fit and understand that some of the tracks comprise loose stones or cobbles. The emphasis of the walks is not a route march, but leisurely enjoyment and appreciation of the diverse surroundings, flora, history and culture that is Crete.

Walking Adventure

Encosta Cabo Girâo, Madeira

There is no better destination for walkers than Madeira. On first view, most visitors are amazed that such a mountainous island is a destination for leisurely walking, but it is thanks to the first settlers and cultivators of the island that Madeira can be discovered at ground level by all. Lifeblood to Madeira are 'levadas' or mini canal systems of irrigation and waterways across the island. Each levada has a walkway along its side which is accessible to everyone so they can enjoy the surrounding scenery and landscape. If there are many uphill climbs they are generally limited and most days walking is along a level pathway. After meandering through wooded forests or alongside villages, you may suddenly spy an unspoilt view right across the valley to the sea, as literally you never know what is around the next corner. With its sub-tropical forest, rugged volcanic sea shore, steep gorges and terraced hillsides, you'll soon be agreeing that Madeira is a walker's heaven.
