Then we start climbing to the peak of the Encumeada pass where both south and north side of the island can be seen, then to Sâo Vicente where we visit the church and the centre of this oldest village in the north. We drive along the steep and fascinating North Coast through Seixal on to Porto Moniz with its famous rock swimming-pools. Here we will take our lunch-break. Then we go further up to the plateau of Paúl da Serra, back to Cabo Girão.

East of Madeira

We first visit Camacha, centre of the wickerwork, then the third highest peak on the island, Pico Arieiro (1818m). where you will have a breathtaking view of Madeira. From here we make our way along the beautiful landscape of Ribeiro Frio, a natural park with a trout-hatchery, where you can take a walk (ca. 30min.) along a levada to the Balcões. On to Santana, famous for its brightly coloured houses with thatched roofs. Then on to Faial and down to Porto da Cruz, Machico with a stop-over at Pico do Facho and then we pass the airport, Santa Cruz back to Cabo Girão.

South East of Madeira

We will first of all go to Madeira's statue of Christ which is situated in Garajau, overlooking the bay of Funchal. Our next stop will be the small town of Santa Cruz where we will visit the beautiful old town. Afterwards we will go to the very eastern end of the island, Ponta Sao Lourenco offering a varied landscape of vegetation against a yellow and red steep rock formation forming a contrast to the sea. On our return journey we will visit the village of Machico where you will have time to stroll around to enjoy the sights.

We go to Eira do Serrado (1094m) which commands a spectacular view of Curral das Freiras (Nuns' Valley) which we will visit afterwards. The next stop will be Monte where you can walk through the delightful park to the church of Our Lady of the Mount. At the bottom of the church you will find the wicker toboggans. You may take the optional toboggan-run to Funchal where we will meet you again to go back to Cabo Girão.

The Levada da Serra is about 27 Kilometres long out of which we have chosen the nicest part and this is passable for everybody. The view from the starting point in approx. 550 m height down into the valley of Serra de Água is really spectacular and stunning is the road that leads to this tiny little village giving a good idea of how the people of Madeira used to live and still do. The Rural North

On this walk, you may discover one of the most original regions of Madeira here, time seems to have come to a hold: the valley of Boa Ventura. On our route, we find old paths that were laid out in troublesome hand labour, as well as the Levada de Cima which has, to a great deal, a natural course and which we follow till its romantic spring. A walk of contrasts: mountains, valleys and the sea.

We follow the levada do Furado and are surrounded by a primitive forest of countless characteristic plants. The play of light and shadows between Laurel trees, rocks and waterfalls is spectacular. The second part of the walk is totally different. We will cross sunny meadows, enjoy the view over the majestic mountains, deep valleys and the peaceful villages on the north coast of the island.

Pico Arieiro

The mountain walk goes from the third highest peak (Pico Arieiro 1818 m) to the highest peak of the island (Pico Ruivo 1862 m). From here we go down the north side to Achada do Teixeira. This is the most famous - and without any doubt one of the nicest mountain walks of Madeira. The path was made in the late sixties and the parts where there could be vertigo problems are well secured with fences. From the top of the Pico Ruivo you will have spectacular panoramic views over almost the whole island. A must for the reafwalkers!

San Sebastian was the first Spanish settlement on La Gomera in the 15th century. The town makes much of its association with Christopher Columbus, who made the island his last stop before sailing west in 1492. Our guided visit takes us to the highlights of San Sebastián: the Torre del Conde, the Casa de la Aguada, where Columbus supplied himself with the water for the journey, the church of La Asunción. After the guided visit you have still time to discover the town yourself or you can visit the very interesting Archaeological Museum.

Lunch is at the Parador in San Sebastian. To eat at Paradores is to enter a world of flavours which in the present recall the past and lead us to the future. The past and present of Spanish and gomeran gastronomy are combined in the same place: the table of Paradores. A whistling exhibition pleasantly rounds out our excursion. After lunch we take you to the Meseta of Hermigua, where the forest “distill” the water of the mist. An easy stroll of 30 min. in the National Park shows you the immense diversity of this ecosystem and your spirit will be refreshed.

The Verdant North Walk

La Gomera - Ancient Hamlets and almighty views

This walk takes you into one of the most beautiful areas of Gomeran countryside, rarely frequented by visitors. We believe that this walk is a "must" as you will see centuries of country life unfold, feel the remoteness and smell the nature. In total contrast to the seclusion, the immense views on this walk extend to the Northern coastline and out to the sea, soaring over "barrancos" enveloping lost settlements. Our walk starts in Meriga, a beautiful hamlet on the edge of the forest where it is not uncommon to catch a glimpse of our indigenous laurel pigeon and ends at the Ermita de San Isidrio at La Palmita. The tour, in general, is fairly undemanding but could be quite lengthy for some (8.5kms). We recommend walking poles as there is a short rocky descent for 50m and a short, steep uphill part at the end of the walk, to reach the church. We stop at the Visitors Centre of the National Park, where we can eat our packed lunch.

This trip provides an insider´s view to La Gomera, the people, their traditions and culture, agriculture, the history of the island, as well as environmental, social and political issues. This trip will introduce you to the diversity of this "magic" island. From the lush valleys of the North, with their banana plantations, cultivated terraces and sub-tropical vegetation. We include two optional strolls of 30 minutes each. One in the picturesque village of Agulo, known as the "bonbon" of La Gomera and another in the National Park. The Wild West

Epina - Santa Clara - Vallehermoso

This is a spectacular, panoramic walk into the wild north west, with its immense scenery, intense colors and weather-beaten coastline. This track starts in the west, near the settlement of Epina and takes us to the Ermita de Santa Clara, high on a cliff top with views to the island of La Palma and the village of Arguamul with its old farmhouses, vineyards and palm groves. From Santa Clara we then take a lovely, old path through the picturesque Barranco de Era Nueva. This walk is not difficult, but because of the length (9.5km) and loose ground you need to have some "staying power" and a good balance. Walking poles recommended.

We have the pleasure to offer this very special excursion to one of the most beautiful valleys on La Gomera, Valle Gran Rey, the valley of the Great King. The upper part of the valley has been recently affected by forest fires, but see for yourself, walking down the valley on tarmac tracks and stone paths with our local guide, how quickly nature and village recover from the disaster. The walk takes you to the lower part of the valley, walking through the settlements of El Retamal, El Hornillo, Chelé and Los Reyes. At the end of the walk we meet the bus to take us to the beach. If you prefer spending the whole time at the coast, you can be taken to the beach of Valle Gran Rey directly. From La Playa it is easy to discover on your own the area with plenty of shops and bars. We finish the excursion having a wonderful dinner at César Manrique´s Restaurant and enjoying the view over the valley with a spectacular sunset.

Morning - the coach will take you to the English bastide of Beaumont & its fortified houses. Then on to the French 13th century 'bastide' of Villeréal (occupied by the English for 174 years) with free time for its traditional quaint marked fixed on Saturday by Edward 1st of England. Afterwards visit to the famous English bastide of Monpazier founded in 1284 by King Edward I, and best kept bastide in the Dordogne. Free time to stroll round and for lunch. Finally visit the impressive 12th century fortress of Biron. Rebuilt in 13th century, it changed hands constantly during the Hundred Years War, and was transformed in the 15th and 16th centuries (Leaflet and audio guide in English provided at the castle)

Weekly guided bird watching trips with David Simpson author of 'Birding Dordogne' visiting the river, meadows, forest and farmland looking for birds such as Wallcreeper, Black Woodpecker, Great White Egret and Peregrine in winter (Nov-Mar) and Red-backed Shrike, Hoopoe, Black Kite and Cirl Bunting in summer (Apr-Oct). During the summer months we will also be looking at the great variety of butterflies, dragonflies and orchids. In addition there will be an introduction to bird song and calls. Guided history trip

All day visit by minibus with David Simpson, author of 'Birding Dordogne', to little-known historical sites covering the stone age, medieval, and a 19th century periods, while keeping an eye on the local flora and fauna. This trip will be a series of stops and a few easy walks.

Morning: drive eastwards to the prehistoric cave of St Cirq with engravings and artefacts. Thereafter travel back down the valley to the ancient abbey of Paunat in a little rural hamlet. Lunch stop in a pretty auberge next to this beautiful abbey. Afternoon: back westwards to a fine piece of early industrial infrastructure: the Lalinde canal, river barrages and a modern fish lift.

In the heart of the Pécharmant vineyards, you can taste in this 17th-century family estate high-quality Pécharmants produced by a family which has been passionated about its wines for the past five centuries. Seven hectares of the vineyards are harvested manually to produce the Cuvée Grand Millésime. The rest are harvested by machine and taken to a sorting table, where only the best of the crop are retained. Grapes are then vinified with great care and matured in barrels of French oak for 12 to 18 months in the 17th-century winery.
The beautiful residence, looking out over the Dordogne’s right bank from the slopes up-river from Bergerac, was formerly a lordly manor. It is said to have been founded in the 13th century by a natural son of England’s King Edward III named Edward Tyrgan. The Château de Tiregand, listed in the official supplement of France’s Historic Buildings, now belongs to the heirs of the Countess François de St Exupéry.

Departure from Hilguy at 10.30 am. We will go to Pont l’Abbé market. It is a nice little town with an old castle and old houses along the river and the pond. You will have time to stroll at the market and have lunch. They are plenty of nice restaurants and crêperies that we can recommend.

After lunch we will go for a nice gentle walk along the river, watch the birds, and the beautiful stainglass windown of the church Notre Dame des Carmes.

We will then take direction to Distillery des Menhirs located in Plomelin near Quimper. The distillery owes its originality to buckwheat and cider apples, both emblematic products of Brittany, and the range of high quality brandies and whiskies.

Passionate about the art of distilling, the Le Lay family focuses on the creation of a very original whisky, not based on malted barley like Scotch whiskies but on buckwheat : Breton buckwheat. Like in Scotland’s pure malt distilleries, this whisky is created in the purest tradition of Scotch whiskies. Eddu, as this whisky is called (it means buckwheat in the Breton language), succeeded in imposing its own style.

We will visit the Distillery and taste their pommeaux, brandies and whiskies.

Return to Hilguy around 5 pm.

Douarnenez, Visit of a small-scale canning factory and Biscuit factory

We will leave the Manoir at 13.30, taking direction to Douarnenez.

Douarnenez has a strong character, steeped in maritime history. This is a town of contrasts, beginning with the old quarters and cobbled alleyways that are inextricably linked to the town's sardine-fishing commerce of the past. The Port-Rhu has a pleasant promenade and footbridge over to the marina of Tréboul. The port of Rosmeur used to be home to 800 sardine chaloupes.

We will visit the small-scale fish canning factory of Kerbriant. It is a family owned business which was started in 1986. All the fishes are locally sourced and canned in a craftsmen way. Sardins, mackerels, tunas are prepared with some spices and for some with seaweeds. We will finish the visit of the factory by tasting some products.

Then we will visit the biscuit factory : Biscuiterie de Douarnenez. We will see the preparation of the famous speciality of Douarnenez : the kouing-amann and a selection of other breton biscuits. All their products are organic. Of course you will taste the products !

On your way back we will be taking the coastal road and you will discover the Douarnenez bay one of the most beautiful bays in Europe, wrapped in the myths of the Ville d'Ys - a city lost to the waves, like Atlantis.

A 1½-hour cave trip in a traditional Portuguese fishing boat, visiting the most beautiful caves along the coast between Senhora da Rocha and Benagil beach. After the boat trip you can enjoy a few hours on Albandeira beach (alternatively Armação de Pera beach), or have lunch in the local beach bar before returning to Casa Bonina.

Our trip departs from Tarifa, the fast ferry getting us to North Africa in approx. 35-40 minutes. After the caves, we visit the scenic wine-producing mountain village of Competa where, after a short sight-seeing walk, we lunch at a local hotel.

The elegant wealthy city is one of the most beautiful in Andalucâ a and home to the Mezquita, the only Mosque-Cathedral in the world. Then travel through mountain scenery, olive groves, and the wine growing region. Arriving in Cordoba mid morning, you will have five hours to enjoy this lovely city, with its beautiful fountains, Alcazar gardens, Roman Baths, and the famous Jewish Quarter.

Matera

Matera is a wonderful town and has been called the most fascinating city in southern Italy. It is both beautiful and intriguing. It is a town that UNESCO has proclaimed as a world heritage site. The town is famous for its Sassi or caves from the Paleolithic age (dating back to 1500 B.C.). The caves are divided into the Sasso Caveoso and the Sasso Barisano. At one time the people of Matera lived in the cave dwellings. The town actually sits on the edge of a deep gorge and there are caves on either side of the gorge. In the 1950s the people living in the caves were forced to move out and find new homes. The area was then and continues to be taken care of and preserved. I enjoyed walking and climbing the hills and steps to see the many different homes and churches (in the caves). Make sure you walk the Strada dei Sassi.

Castel del Monte

Resting on a peak rising over background of the Murgia, Castel del Monte, should in no way be omitted from this quest for Frederician castles in the Bari provincial area. 18 Km. from Andria on a hill 540 mt. high and overlooking a vast expanse, it is famous for its octagonal structure, Each of its sides measures 16.50 mt; its geometric harmony depends on the fact that there are eight 25 metre Octagonal towers. It was very probably built as a hunting residence by Frederick II (keen on hunting with falcons) between 1229 and 1249.

The Alhambra, Granada

Alfaix

The coach departs from the site at 7am, stopping after approximately 2 hours drive for a comfort break and an opportunity to purchase breakfast. Half of the excursion (approx 2 and half hours) is spent visiting the Alhambra with the services of an English speaking guide and with the other half of the excursion you get to have some free time in the city centre. The coach departs from Granada once again stopping en-route back to the site for a comfort break. No refreshments or meals included

Almeria

The coach departs from the site at 8.45 driving directly to Almeria. Approximate journey time 50 minutes. Bond- holders visit the beautiful cathedral before moving onto The Alcazaba which is the second oldest fortress in Spain (please note that to reach the Alcazaba there is a steep walk along a cobbled path, once in the Alcazaba there are many steps, most areas are without a handrail to aid mobility). After visiting the Alcazaba you will then have a little free time in the centre of Almeria for a coffee break or a bit of shopping. *Please note that you spend the time alone in the Alcazaba as guides are not permitted to enter the area. Sopalmo

The coach departs from the site at the alloted time and travels down through Mojacar Playa to the beautiful area of Sopalmo where you will enjoy a guided walk of between 6 and 7 kilometres, taking in fantastic views. The walk is suitable for all abilities. No refreshments or meals included.
