Levada Rabaçal

We go towards the west coast of the island up to the Paúl da Serra (±1200 m) to Rabaçal. Rabaçal is an enchanting fairyland of singing waterfalls. Here at the head of Madeira's largest valley, the Rabaçal house lies dwarfed beneath emerald mountains. Three levadas draw their water here; each has its own personality and this walk introduces you to all three of them.

Northwest of Madeira

We will drive first to Ribeira Brava where you can look around the village. Then we start climbing to the peak of the Encumeada pass where both south and north side of the island can be seen, then to Sâo Vicente where we visit the church and the centre of this oldest village in the north. We drive along the steep and fascinating North Coast through Seixal on to Porto Moniz with its famous rock swimming-pools. Here we will take our lunch-break. Then we go further up to the plateau of Paúl da Serra, back to Cabo Girão.

East of Madeira

We first visit Camacha, centre of the wickerwork, then the third highest peak on the island, Pico Arieiro (1818m). where you will have a breathtaking view of Madeira. From here we make our way along the beautiful landscape of Ribeiro Frio, a natural park with a trout-hatchery, where you can take a walk (ca. 30min.) along a levada to the Balcões. On to Santana, famous for its brightly coloured houses with thatched roofs. Then on to Faial and down to Porto da Cruz, Machico with a stop-over at Pico do Facho and then we pass the airport, Santa Cruz back to Cabo Girão.

Mid Madeira

We will take the shortest way to the 'Caves of Sao Vicente'. The tour through the caves guided by a specialist should be pointed out as a must for every Madeira visitor. Very interesting! We move on to the northeast and pass Ponta Delgada, Boa Ventura and Sao Jorge with overwhelming views onto the coastline, villages and terrace fields, daringly located, which even Madeira freaks might not have seen. Through a new tunnel-system it will take only a few minutes to get to a rarely used but charming road from where we have great views onto the highest peaks and the Eagle's Rock. In Santo do Serra you can take a stroll along the typical Sunday market. From here we drive back to Cabo Girão.

South East of Madeira

We will first of all go to Madeira's statue of Christ which is situated in Garajau, overlooking the bay of Funchal. Our next stop will be the small town of Santa Cruz where we will visit the beautiful old town. Afterwards we will go to the very eastern end of the island, Ponta Sao Lourenco offering a varied landscape of vegetation against a yellow and red steep rock formation forming a contrast to the sea. On our return journey we will visit the village of Machico where you will have time to stroll around to enjoy the sights.

Botanical Garden & Quinta Splendida

First you will visit the Botanical Garden, renowned for its beauty. You will find here almost all the species of the plant life of Madeira. The second visit is to Caniço and to the Quinta Splendida which has a lovely garden where you can stroll around and/or sit and enjoy a coffee.

Nun's Valley and Monte

We go to Eira do Serrado (1094m) which commands a spectacular view of Curral das Freiras (Nuns' Valley) which we will visit afterwards. The next stop will be Monte where you can walk through the delightful park to the church of Our Lady of the Mount. At the bottom of the church you will find the wicker toboggans. You may take the optional toboggan-run to Funchal where we will meet you again to go back to Cabo Girão.

Enchanting Views

On this trip we will take you to some of the most spectacular viewpoints within the island's interior. First we will go up to Boca dos Namorados where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Nun's Valley lying some 800 metres below. Our day continues passing many typical local villages to visit another outstanding viewing spot above the Ribeira Brava Valley.

The Levada da Serra is about 27 Kilometres long out of which we have chosen the nicest part and this is passable for everybody. The path along the Levada is wide so you will not have any difficulties walking. This walk offers the opportunity to finish earlier than after 2 hours even for individual persons of the group.

The view from the starting point in approx. 550 m height down into the valley of Serra de Água is really spectacular and stunning is the road that leads to this tiny little village giving a good idea of how the people of Madeira used to live and still do. We follow the Levada do Norte as a mere leisure walk.

The Rural North

On this walk, you may discover one of the most original regions of Madeira here, time seems to have come to a hold: the valley of Boa Ventura. On our route, we find old paths that were laid out in troublesome hand labour, as well as the Levada de Cima which has, to a great deal, a natural course and which we follow till its romantic spring. A walk of contrasts: mountains, valleys and the sea.

Southwest of Madeira

We drive along the sunny southcoast to Ponta do Sol, on to Calheta where we will visit the sugarcane-aguardente-distillary. We move on to Jardim do Mar, then Paúl do Mar. This is one of the most fascinating villages of the island. Paul do Mar lies at the foot of a breathtaking mountain side. You can have a stroll along the small streets. Then we go on to the most westerly point of Madeira, the lighthouse of Ponta do Pargo, with 310m above sea level the highest of Portugal.

Ribeiro Frio

We follow the levada do Furado and are surrounded by a primitive forest of countless characteristic plants. The play of light and shadows between Laurel trees, rocks and waterfalls is spectacular. The second part of the walk is totally different. We will cross sunny meadows, enjoy the view over the majestic mountains, deep valleys and the peaceful villages on the north coast of the island.

Ponta São Lourenço

The very east end of the island, Ponta São Lourenço, has another kind of vegetation. The yellowish, reddish steep rock formations, as a result of millions of years of erosion form a beautiful contrast to the sea. This walk will be a totally different experience. You will have a fine view to Ponta Santo and the Desertas islands. As the Ponta São Lourenço belongs to the most sunny parts of the island, don't forget your swimsuits.

Pico Arieiro

The mountain walk goes from the third highest peak (Pico Arieiro 1818 m) to the highest peak of the island (Pico Ruivo 1862 m). From here we go down the north side to Achada do Teixeira. This is the most famous - and without any doubt one of the nicest mountain walks of Madeira. The path was made in the late sixties and the parts where there could be vertigo problems are well secured with fences. From the top of the Pico Ruivo you will have spectacular panoramic views over almost the whole island. A must for the reafwalkers!

Lakes of Madeira

Come along with us on a variegated, unforgettable walk which is known by only a few naturefriends. We start off on the high plateau Paúl da Serra and follow the Levada da Ribeira Grande. Soon we descend to the Lagoa do Vento from where we have a breath-taking view into the valley of Rabaçal. There we can have a peaceful picnic or go for a refreshing swim in a cristal-clear lake. Further along, you will see beautiful water cascades followed by one of Madeira's original levadas which is surrounded by bizarre vegetation. The last part of the walk takes us along the high-plateau itself where we will find peace and quiet, wonderful views around and, at the end, onto the villages of the southwest.

The Enchanted Forest Walk

This is a truly, magical and easy walk, in the luxuriant vegetation of La Gomeras' primeval forest leading onto a track with beautiful views of the village countryside It is a perfect route for anyone wishing to discover the botanical riches of the National Park of Garajonay and presents a fascinating tale of nature, human life and survival. Lunch is at the spectacular viewpoint-restaurant designed by César Manrique, at an altitude of 780m overlooking the palm groves and terraces of the barranco of Guadé, Valle Gran Rey. Here, the acclaimed artist/ environmentalist from Lanzarote, has created an environment which blends sympathetically with its surroundings.

Boat Trip

Volcanoes and Views Walk (NEW)

A Panoramic Walk. Half day tour.

Get your cameras clicking, to capture what is undoubtedly the most spectacular scenery on the Island. This panoramic walk is not particularly strenuous as the paths are undulating and there are no major ascents or descents. The views from the central plateau area reveal the beautiful valley of Benchijigua, dramatic gorges, monolithic rocks or plugs, fissures or dykes, which demonstrate a dramatic cycle of volcanic eruptions combined with prolonged periods of calm which enabled the forces of nature to sculpt away, creating a relief formed by the passage of time.

The Verdant North Walk (NEW)

La Gomera

This new walk in the N.E. takes you into one of the most beautiful areas of Gomeran countryside, rarely frequented by visitors. We believe that this walk is a "must" as you will see centuries of country life unfold, feel the remoteness and smell the nature. In total contrast to the seclusion, the immense views on this walk extend to the Northern coastline and out to sea, soaring over "barrancos" enveloping lost settlements. Our walk starts in Meriga, a beautiful hamlet on the edge of the forest where it is not uncommon to catch a glimpse of our indigenous laurel pigeon and ends at the Ermita de San Isidro at La Palmita. The route in general is fairly undemanding and could be quite lengthy for some (8.5 kms). We recommend walking poles as there is a short rocky descent for 50 m and a short steep uphill part at the end of the walk, to reach the church. We stop at the visitors centre where we can eat our packed lunch and enjoy the installations.

Island Tour

La Gomera

This trip provides an insiders view to La Gomera, the people, their traditions and culture, agriculture, the history of the Island, as well as environmental, social and political issues. This trip will introduce you to the diversity of this "magic" Island. From the National Park of Garajonay to the lush valleys of the North, with their banana plantations, cultivated terraces and sub-tropical vegetation. We include two optional strolls (30 minutes each), one in the picturesque village of Agulo, known as the "bonbon" of La Gomera and another in the National Park. Those who do not wish to walk can remain in the bar. By the end of the day, you will know a great deal about the island and its people and you will judge if the "magic" really exists. Valley of Water Walk

La Gomera

This stunning walk is for walkers and starts in the National Park of Garajonay. It is a downhill walk in three parts. The first part of the walk takes you through pine trees, brooms, agave and euphorbia on an ancient footpath to the village of La Laja. Tihs village, abandoned by the local population in the middle of the last century, is now, marginally coming back to life as a retreat for those wanting peace, tranquility and beautiful nature. The third part of the walk, Chejelipes to Lomo Fragoso brings us to an area of fincas (farms) fruits trees, beautiful homes and the Chejelipes Dam.

Lunch is in a small local bar in a beautiful rural setting.

Walk to Vallehermoso

La Gomera

This walk is for walkers with some experience. This diverse, downhill walk is consistently spectacular with each step and will offer three different panorama. The walk begins with an area of luxuriant, rainforest vegetation (laurisilva) Often, a misty veil spreads over this moss-covered evergreen forest, the trees form a thick moisture -laden canopy over the forest floor. In abrupt contrast, the second part is now on an old shepherds' path with splendid views, a wilderness of fig trees, brambles and sweet-chestnut trees. The third part of the walk, is a feast for the eyes and senses with fruit trees, vineyards, cultivated terraces, stone cottages, exotic flowers and more. Lunch Bar Amaya, Vallehermoso.

The Wild West

La Gomera

This is a spectacular, panoramic walk in the "wild" North West, with its immense scenery, intense colours and weather-beaten coastline. The track starts in the west, near the settlement of Epina and takes us to the Ermita de Santa Clara, high on a cliff- top with views to the island of La Palma and the village of Arguamul with its old farmhouses, vineyards and palm groves. From Santa Clara we then take a lovely, old camino through the picturesque Barranco de *Era Nueva (*era-threshing circle). This walk is not difficult but because of the length (9.5kms) you need to have some "staying power".

Rainforest Walk

La Gomera

This walk takes us through the finest example of Macronesian "laurisilva" vegetation that exists in the world today. Laurisilva is a subtropical, forest eco-system, which covered the entire Mediterranean basin, dating back to the tertiary period. A magical downhill walk, on a stepped path, passing areas of dense forest, trees dripping with mosses and lichens, twisted by the ravages of time and their fight for light. We pass small brooks and streams, the tiny Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes in the heart of the forest, where we replenish our water from the spring. We walk to the tiny hamlet of El Cedro and eat in the Bar La Vista. NEWS ! We now have permission for the transport to enter the park and pick us up after lunch (5 min walk).

On Mondays and Fridays, you can go on a Jeep Safari in open jeeps, off the beaten track through the mountains. The journey will take you through some of the most fascinating places in the Algarve. Visit a small local distillery and sample the famous medronho. Lunch in a traditional Portuguese restaurant . This day out will teach you a lot about the flora and fauna of the Algarve and is a fun day for all of the family. Departure from Casa Bonina at app. 8.50am. Return at app. 4.30pm.

On Tuesdays, enjoy a sunset sailing trip on the sailing yacht "Sun Odyssey" – a chance to discover one of the most beautiful coastlines of Europe. Enjoy a relaxing day of sailing or learn a little more about sailing. You will set sail from Portimão to Lagos, visit the stunning rock formations of Ponte da Piedade by small boat, go for a swim in the refreshing waters of the Atlantic and sail along the coast to witness an amazing sunset whilst entering Portimão harbour.

Departure from Casa Bonina at app. 2pm. Return at app. 10pm.

Boat trip and beach visit

On Thursdays, there is a boat trip and beach visit. A 1½-hour cave trip in a traditional Portuguese fishing boat, visiting the most beautiful caves along the coast between Senhora da Rocha and Benagil beach. After the boat trip you can enjoy a few hours on Albandeira beach (alternatively Armação de Pera beach), or have lunch in the local beach bar before returning to Casa Bonina.

Departure from Casa Bonina at 10.45am. Return at 3pm.

Tangiers

Our trip departs from Tarifa, the fast ferry getting us to North Africa in approx. 35-40 minutes. The tour will include the Caves of Hercules, followed by a typical Moroccan lunch, a Berber Arabian Fantasia show (which includes Belly Dancing, Horse Show, etc.) and after lunch we escort you to the Medina (old part of town) Souk (shops and market) and Kasbah (fortress). Our guide will accompany you at all times. After this 90 min. walk, we take a short refreshment stop, if time allows before boarding our ferry back to Spain.

After the caves, we visit the scenic wine-producing mountain village of Competa where, after a short sight-seeing walk, we lunch at a local hotel.

A morning drive to Antequera, where we stop for around two hours, to explore this Moorish town, with its castle and many churches. We then show you the splendour of the Spanish Lake District, and the peace and beauty of the Ardales National Park. After lunch, we visit the dramatic El Chorro Gorge, returning through Sun Valley.

Arriving in Cordoba mid morning, you will have five hours to enjoy this lovely city, with its beautiful fountains, Alcazar gardens, Roman Baths, and the famous Jewish Quarter.

Matera

Matera is a wonderful town and has been called the most fascinating city in southern Italy. It is both beautiful and intriguing. It is a town that UNESCO has proclaimed as a world heritage site. The town is famous for its Sassi or caves from the Paleolithic age (dating back to 1500 B.C.). The caves are divided into the Sasso Caveoso and the Sasso Barisano. At one time the people of Matera lived in the cave dwellings. The town actually sits on the edge of a deep gorge and there are caves on either side of the gorge. In the 1950s the people living in the caves were forced to move out and find new homes. The area was then and continues to be taken care of and preserved. I enjoyed walking and climbing the hills and steps to see the many different homes and churches (in the caves). Make sure you walk the Strada dei Sassi.

Castel del Monte

Resting on a peak rising over background of the Murgia, Castel del Monte, should in no way be omitted from this quest for Frederician castles in the Bari provincial area. 18 Km. from Andria on a hill 540 mt. high and overlooking a vast expanse, it is famous for its octagonal structure, Each of its sides measures 16.50 mt; its geometric harmony depends on the fact that there are eight 25 metre Octagonal towers. It was very probably built as a hunting residence by Frederick II (keen on hunting with falcons) between 1229 and 1249.

Bond- holders visit the beautiful cathedral before moving onto The Alcazaba which is the second oldest fortress in Spain (please note that to reach the Alcazaba there is a steep walk along a cobbled path, once in the Alcazaba there are many steps, most areas are without a handrail to aid mobility). After visiting the Alcazaba you will then have a little free time in the centre of Almeria for a coffee break or a bit of shopping. *Please note that you spend the time alone in the Alcazaba as guides are not permitted to enter the area.
